Week 5: Recreating a Memory Using ARKit on IPad

The memory I decided to recreate was my wedding day. We got lucky and our date hit right at the peak of the cherry blossom bloom that year. After the ceremony, Josh and I wandered off after the guests left and took a little moment for ourselves before joining them again for the dinner.

I remade this in Unity using Fuse models with Mixamo animations and cherry blossom trees from the asset store.

I originally intended for the camera to be top down, but when I first tested it the camera angle was through the tree branches and I decided to keep it that way. I like how it feels like you are under the trees with the blossoms falling, peering through the branches to spy on the couple.

Week 4: AR Using Vuforia: The First Elevator

Hayley and I worked on different elements to bring the story of the First Elevator to life. The player is given the role of a psychic trainee at a Medium Agency. They are to investigate the paranormal activity happening in the elevator by using special scanners, the personal belongings of the dead, and markings found in the elevator.

The trainee's role is to find and capture evidence of paranormal activity to report back to the agency.
Right now, the virtual buttons are appearing when triggered but they are not yet interactive. I think the problem is that the underlying image target doesn't have enough unique features to occlude. I would like to try implementing virtual buttons again starting over with new image targets to see if that addresses the issue.

Given more time to build out the story, we would like to provide the player with more artifacts to scan to discover what really happened between the 3 characters: the letter author, his wife, and the elevator attendant.

Week 3: AR using Unity Assignment Pitch  <- Slide Link

Hayley and I decided that we wanted to use the elevators at Magnet, and immediately agreed that we wanted to do a ghost story since it's October!

Students at Magnet may not realize that the building was originally the site of a deluxe hotel....one that had modern amenities such as air conditioning and even an elevator with an attendant who worked inside to take you to your floor....

He worked there night and day...going up, going down... over and over......in a windowless, cramped space....nothing to break the monotony of his days.....

Until one day a pair of newlyweds moved into the hotel.

He instantly found himself drawn to the young wife. The attendant treasured every second that it took to take her from the lobby to her floor and back again. One day, she seemed to really notice him for the first time.  But her husband was the jealous kind.

What happened next is for the players to solve....can they help the restless spirit still trapped in the elevator after all these years?

The Attendant will feature props such as vintage notes and photographs, and recordings of popular midcentury songs that will fill the elevator with a haunting atmosphere.

Week 2: Indexical Storytelling

One of my favorite uses of indexical storytelling in film is when protagonists are presented with an alternative reality to the world they know, usually due to choices that protagonist has made. As one of the earliest examples, we have the holiday classic, It's a Wonderful Life, starring Jimmy Stewart. When Jimmy's character, George Bailey, laments the struggle of his life, his guardian angel Clarence shows him what his hometown would be like if he George never existed.

Quick shots of Main Street in what is now "Pottersville" show the moral decay that has happened. Cocktail Bars! Burlesque Clubs! Pawn Brokers! These signposts quickly reveal how the town has transformed into a den of sin.

This same technique was also used in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode "Wish." Cordelia's wish that Buffy never came to Sunnydale is granted, resulting in a world where vampires run the town. She finds herself back at school, only there are half as many students in her class, her formerly fashion-loving friends are conservatively dressed to avoid attracting vampire attention, and there are cloves of garlic hanging off of the lockers.

Later, Cordelia walks down a deserted Main Street where all the shops are closed due to a sunset curfew, and discovers her friends Willow and Xander are now vampires. The changes to their characters are signaled in their clothing, with the dorky human characters now confident, leather-clad hunters.
In both "Wonderful" and "Buffy" these glimpses of a visually bleak alternate world attempt to teach the protagonists to appreciate the imperfect reality from which they originally came.

 WEEK 1: Augment using Blippar

After not being able to get the Apple logo to work in Blippar, I decided to take inspiration from one of the greatest movies of the 80s, They Live, featuring Roddy Piper and his glorious hair.

So, I grabbed one of the latest covers of Marie Claire, featuring Wonder Woman herself:

And gave it a They Live spin. I may have taken the spin part a little bit too literally.

(The 3D money spins. Like, really fast. Better spend it quick!)
