*******************************OFFICE HOURS*******************************
Corey's office hours are on Wednesdays from noon-3pm in Room 831
I'm frequently available at the game center, sometimes even late at night, so shoot me an email at cb3628@nyu.edu if you want to meet at a different time
If you have trouble finding room 831, go to where we normally have class and turn around

This new plugin by Google might be of use to some of you wanting to do more spatial audio things. Seems like it's designed to work on mobile devices - compare that with SteamAudio's more robust audio spatializer system, which is a CPU hog that doesn't scale down well.

Some cool mixed media (possibly AR?) work being shown this weekend at a pop up gallery:
related - an artist whose installation at babycastles earlier this year might relate to the "memory creation" assignment. or just some food for thought.

2 Oct 2017
Overheard - A Site-Specific Audio Experience
This might be of interest to some of you for your projects.
Also take note - this was funded by an arts/technology grant which is open through October 27. I was a finalist last year - it doesn't require any sort of tech demo, just pitch your idea.
You should apply!

A game that might be of interest re: Indexical Storytelling:
NaissanceE. While not a commercial hit, NaissanceE told it's story almost entirely through it's spaces, which were largely abstract and devoid of symbolism.
The first 30 seconds of the video form the game's only cutscene. We hear a character, presumably female, breathing heavily as the camera bobs up and down. Their gaze darts down identical-looking monochrome hallways. They catch a glimpse of something dark and do a double take, establishing that they're being pursued by something. They gasp as they nearly collide with this entity, then fall down a pit as the camera fades to black.
What's interesting about this sequence is that it serves multiple purposes - introducing us to this uncanny space, establishing our motivation, and also introducing two gameplay principles. Breath control while running is a gameplay mechanic in NaissanceE, and fall damage is your primary danger.
The player gains control of the character when they awaken. They look around and see a broken pedestal where they fell. The contrast of the fractured volume against the orthogonal lines of the space implies that our presence in this world shatters it's Platonic idealism.
Later on in the game, we revisit this index:
immediately after the chapter title "deeper into madness." This is a clear callback to the platform that the character broke during their fall in the opening and complicates their relationship to the space. We're no longer sure if this space is physical or exists in Lucy's mind.
Those familiar with architecture can recognize the similarities between the game world and the speculative architecture of the Futurists, as well as Brutalism, MC Escher and Lebbeus Woods.

My page is a little empty, so I thought I'd use it to post some cool AR-related links
WebGL auteur and all-around cool dude Isaac Cohen has released his first AR app called Arqua, which he made with Apple's AR Kit:
While not strictly-speaking a narrative experience, Isaac is interested in imbuing virtual objects with a sense of life and autonomy. He has talked about creating a virtual ecosystem of these kinds of organisms - kind of like the Codex Seraphinianus in a digital space.
For a much more traditionally narrative incarnation of his ideas, you should check out Enough

Thought I'd give the assignment a shot too 🕶
